A History of Growth & Innovation

Works Infrastructure UK was formed in the late 1980's as DMQA. Over the years we have earned an enviable reputation within the construction industry for our innovative and adaptable approach to project engineering, achieving nationwide recognition for our work.

In the early 1990's we were awarded our first turnkey contract with the Ministry of Defense at Aldermarston. We were set the near impossible challenge of obtaining approval and accreditation for installation activities within 12 weeks (a challenge many had previously failed to meet).
With a small multi-disciplined project management team we rose to the challenge and, on 12 March 1995, the project was commissioned ahead of schedule.

At about the same time we introduced a new Technical Services Division. Our objective was to offer our customers even further flexibility by hiring temporary engineering staff to meet the peaks in their workload - within 6 months our workforce quadrupled.

Over the next few years a Training Division and Road2Rail Plant Hire were added then - in March 2002 - we acquired a central works planning company based in York and a structural steel and welding company in South Yorkshire. Today we employ in excess of 500 people and our customers include some of the UK's major infrastructure owners.

In April 2006 Downer EDI, an Australian based engineering services group, purchased DMQA and we became Works Infrastructure UK.

The Downer EDI Group is a PLC focused on the design, build, maintenance, and facilities management of infrastructure assets. The Group employs in excess of 18,000 people across a range of operating companies in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Asia and the United Kingdom (for full details on our parent company visit www.downeredi.com)
